“Lessons from the Mountains: 3 Life Lessons That My Climb Taught Me”.

"Those at the top of the mountain didn't just fall there"

Over the past couple of years, I have uncovered a deep passion for climbing mountains, they have been a source of inspiration and awe for me! They symbolise strength, perseverance, and challenge. Based as I am in Barcelona, they are easily accessible, whether it is a weekend escape or a one-day hike. I take full advantage of this as it satisfies my craving for adventure and the outdoor lifestyle that I love.

Breathing in the Pyrenees mountain air, I made my way down from my latest escapade. My head was full of memories from my mountain experiences.

Reflecting now in the comfort of my cabin, I can’t help but think back on the valuable life lessons I’ve gained from climbing three different mountains. At this moment, I am reminded of a quote by Marcus Washling: “Those at the top of the mountain didn’t just fall there”. The quote encourages us to recognize and value the hard work and dedication that goes into achieving our goals, rather than assuming that success comes easily or naturally.

The climber can go on a remarkable journey as they make their way to the summit. With much gratitude I had my own such journey, where I was overcoming obstacles such as fear and self-doubt. It can be an arduous Journey, that can teach you a great deal.

Here’s how my adventures played out:

Mt.Sasso Piatto, Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy.

My 7-day hike through the dolomites was beautiful yet challenging. I did the research on what to expect, the kind of weather extremities that could occur and how to manage energy levels. Climbing Plattkofel (Sasso piatto), I trekked across the wide rocky ridge of the mountain, the steep but not difficult ascent took me to the summit. At 2920m high, which may seem small and unimportant to some but for me it is a cherished steppingstone to greater things.

Lesson 1: Acknowledging our efforts and celebrating our successes is an important part of achieving our goals, no matter how big or small they may be. This can help to build momentum, maintain focus, and keep us moving forward towards our bigger goals making them feel more achievable. So, whether it’s completing a challenging hike, learning a new skill, or simply making progress on a project, take the time to acknowledge your efforts and celebrate your successes. Doing so will help you stay motivated, focused, and on track towards achieving your goals.

Mt.Toubkal, Southwestern Morocco,
Standing 4,167 meters in height, is Morocco’s Mount Toubkal. However, the altitude of Mount Toubkal undoubtedly made this hike harder. After some due consideration I decided I would hire a local guide. Looking back, It was a great comfort to know there was someone familiar with the mountain who had my back as I climbed the steep trail and rock-filled mountain.

Lesson 2: It can be a valuable lesson in recognizing one’s limitations and valuing safety. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a demonstration of strength and good judgement. This lesson can be applied to other areas of life, as well. Whether it’s asking a friend for support in your personal life, or seeking out a mentor in your professional life,Reaching out to someone can prove to be a valuable resource in accomplishing your objectives. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. It is a sign of strength and can increase your chances of success.

Mt.Aneto, Pyrenees Spain
Despite having prepared for the climb both physically and technically, my attempt to climb Mt. Aneto was unsuccessful due to poor weather conditions. After hiking for five hours, a dense fog descended, bringing with it poor visibility. The question of what to do remained on our minds. After waiting for a while in the hope that the fog would clear, and feeling disappointed it was ultimately decided to head back.

Lesson 3: The impact of “disappointments” can feel overwhelming at first, but taking a step back and refocusing allows for a more realistic perspective. In this case, it was unsafe to continue the climb, and another attempt will be made in the future. Setbacks are an inevitable part of life, but they can be used as opportunities for growth and learning.

Conclusion

As I sit here enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Mountains. I think of the importance of working hard and moving towards your destination. Failure to reach your goals can be super discouraging. By practising resilience, you can improve your ability to recover from setbacks. One thing is certain, if you keep taking steps forward, progress is being made. Acknowledge small victories and learn from failures along the way. Eventually, the outcomes of your endeavours will become apparent, even if not immediately recognized. Therefore, keep persevering!

A happy Climber
